Universidade Aberta

Founded in 1988, the Universidade Aberta (UAb) is the only college institution that teaches by distance in Portugal.
For its nature and mission, the UAb uses in its teaching activities, the most advanced technologies and methodologies of distance teaching oriented for education free of geographical and physical borders, with special focus on the expansion of the portuguese culture and language in the spam of the migrant communities and countries that have portuguese as official language.

Thus, the UAb makes available, anywhere in the world, higher education (majors, masters and doctorates) and Lifelong Learning courses. All the educational offer is integrated on the Bologne Process and is lectured in elearning regime, since 2008, year in which the UAb became an european institution of reference, in the domain of online learning, through the recognition of its Modelo Pedagógico Virtual®.
In 2010, the elearning model developed and applyed by UAb was distinguished with the EFQUEL award – European Foundation for Quality in Elearning with UNIQUe certification -The Quality Label for the use of ICT in Higher Education (Universities and Institutes). In the same year, the UAb was also qualified as reference institution for the elearning regime in Portugal by a panel of international independant specialists. In 2011, the UAb was distinguished with the 1st Level of Excellence by the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM).
